De Ceder cycling route

Instant holiday feeling assured along the Lys between Deinze and Ghent! This short tour will take you through the breathtaking landscape that has inspired so many artists.

Accessibility

  • This route is accessible to all, including those riding adapted bicycles.
  • Advantages:
  • The roads on this route are practically all paved.
  • Adapted parking spaces are available.
  • There is accessible sanitation along the way (De Cedar, Mudel and Brielmeersen).

Points for consideration:

  • Seating and picnic benches are not always easily accessible.
  • There are some speed bumps, as well as a short stretch without a bike lane. On that limited stretch, you cycle on the roadway for a while. So do stay on your guard.
  • Take extra care when crossing Gaversesteenweg and Deinsesteenweg.

MUSEUM OF DEINZE AND THE LYS REGION (MUDEL)

preview_L.+MG_2760Fiets+MuDel.jpg

The Lys region has inspired generations of Latem artist groups and other artists from the region. Those who want to get a complete overview, from 1860 to today, should be at this museum. Let yourself be overwhelmed by Emile Claus 'The Beet Harvest', the equally famous 'Crossing of the Ferry on the Lys at Latem' by Xavier De Cock, and further works by George Minne, Constant Permeke and Raoul De Keyser, among others. Don't miss the section on industrial archaeology either: in addition to being a meeting place for artists, Deinze was also known a century ago for its production of silk, prams and toys.

RECREATION PARK THE BRIELMEERSEN

Brielmeersen Deinze TOV.jpg

This 40-hectare recreational estate is located between the Lys and the Schipdonk Canal. With its playground, animal park, maze and miniature golf course, it is a true paradise for children. From the cafeteria patio, keep an eye out over a coffee or regional beer.

node 6

BRASSERIE BRUNO

Want to take in a dose of local art in addition to some classic dishes? Then take a breather at Brasserie BrunO, a former warehouse with a terrace on the Leieboorden. On the private garden terrace at the back and – in the summer – it's always nice to sit at an additional terrace on the quay along the Lys.

Node 6-9

LEIEMEERSEN

Between nodes 6 and 9, it is about three kilometres of very comfortable cycling on the towpath along the Lys. Here, Albijn van den Abeele, the patron of Latem painters, often put the Leiemeersen on canvas in fresh colours and bright light.

Node 11

ASTENE LOCK

Astene sas 1 TOV.jpg

The Astene lock complex, with its drawbridge, lock-master's house and a towpath, is protected as a village landmark. Near the bridge, lock-master Wim, often accompanied by parrot Boris, runs the Oud Sashuis, an authentic pub with a cosy terrace and a nice collection of ship attributes and maritime paintings. You can quench your thirst there with a Schobiak house beer and satisfy your hunger with a hearty sandwich or well-filled 'house dish'.
